Career Stories – Amy Leotta
Meet Amy!
Amy joined Osborne Morris & Morgan in August 2019 and heads up our busy Business Support team, supporting all of the departments across the firm.
Amy shares her career story, what she likes most about OMM’s culture and what she enjoys most about working here.
Tell us a bit about yourself and your background?
I am hard-working and career driven. I’ve worked across several types of upfront client service departments over the last 13 years. I really enjoy being a team leader, as it allows me to work in development and make a difference to the business and its clientele. I had started out at OMM as a secondary administration assistant with no law experience – since then throughout the last few years, I have constructed a new department within the firm and in 2023, I was promoted to manager.
What stood out to you about OMM when applying for opportunities?
Initially, I was seeking new career path opportunities and felt like OMM was an exciting prospect as I hadn’t worked in law before. Once I met the senior management team, I knew that I was in a secure place that was going to support my development and aspirations which reflects in my role progression.
What do you enjoy most about working at OMM?
I enjoy that my role as a team leader of the busy Business Support team is really unique as it allows me to work closely with all departments across the firm. I’m therefore always learning about so many different aspects of law, as well as being lucky enough to work with the exceptional professionals we have. I also take delight in being able to help people, so assisting our client’s both face to face and over the phone, providing them with a formidable service is such a pleasure.
What is the culture like at OMM?
The staff at OMM really make the firm, everyone is very friendly and welcoming. There is both a great team and interdepartmental relationships. Internally, I commend our ability to have fantastic team work across the board and form eminent bonds. I feel that since the start of my journey at OMM, I have been given the tools and opportunities to grow both professionally and personally and I am fully supported. I also find that OMM has amazing connections with other businesses, companies and charities and we take pride that we have built such a rapport in the surrounding communities.
What single factor was the most important when you chose to join OMM?
I wanted to make sure that I was in a role where I could develop and learn new skills, build on my strengths, and be supported in any goals I wanted to achieve. I felt early on that OMM welcomed my budding aspirations with open arms and so I felt this was the right career choice for me.
What is a “normal day” like in your role?
First thing in the morning, I will go over my own correspondence and then check the two inboxes that the team monitor to ascertain the level of task influx that has come in – we support the firm as a whole which means we receive a vast amount of different duties. Some examples are: arranging client appointments, generating documentation and correspondence, creating and updating physical and electronic files, organising client payments and invoices, taking reception overflow calls, and seeing to clients in the office.
I would then discuss with the team which work needs prioritising and organising the work loads across staff where needed. The team work really closely together using a rotational method to ensure all daily expectations are met and tasks are covered for the firm. I work amongst the team throughout the day and action any escalations and delegations. Additionally, I regularly train the team on any new tasks and work with other departments across the firm to ensure efficiency, as well as support fee earners and managers separately.
What advice would you give someone looking to start their career at a law firm?
I would say to anyone beginning a career in law that as it is a longer process than other career choices, starting from the bottom may seem daunting, however, it is absolutely the very best way as you learn such a tremendous amount. The sources from which you learn and the number of lessons throughout your role will surprise you! I think the client satisfaction aspect of law is an underrated factor as you are providing a service helping people throughout the biggest changes of their lives – such as moving house or dealing with losing a loved one – which makes all development in your role contribute towards something rewarding, no matter what stage you are in the role. The process is worthwhile and rewarding with many opportunities and chance for growth.
What would you be if you weren’t a Business Support Team Leader?
I believe I would be a training coach of some sort as I really enjoy working in staff development. I’m really into fitness and building relationships as well, so that probably fits the requirements of a personal trainer type role! I am also quite creative as I used to do marketing and have spent time doing makeup artistry which were both previous potential paths for me, however ultimately I feel I have ended up on the right path!
