Osborne Morris & Morgan wear Dementia Friends badges with pride
An estimated 850,000 people in the UK currently live with dementia, a figure that is set to grow rapidly over the next several decades due to the increase of life expectancy.
Latest predictions tell us that a startling 1 in 3 born in the UK this year will develop dementia in their lifetime. We think it’s vital, therefore, that we learn more about the condition, which is caused by a number of diseases that affect the brain, and how we can help those affected.
So, in February, we had the pleasure of receiving a visit from local Dementia Friends Champion, Carole, to help us to learn more about the condition that affects so many. Carole also shared with us how we can help to change the way we think, act and talk about dementia.
Amy Leotta, an Administrator at OM&M, who was part of the group, said;
“Thanks to Carole, the visit was both informative and a real eye-opener – there was a lot to learn! We are pleased to say, that we are now part of the Dementia Friends programme and wear our badges with pride!”.
Dementia Friends is a programme organised by the Alzheimers Society, which seeks to educate communities about dementia and change any perceptions and misconceptions of the condition.
A ‘Dementia Friend’ is someone who has received an education session from the programme and can then go on to help their local community by either volunteering, fundraising, or simply wearing a badge to help raise awareness. Becoming a Dementia Friend not only helps to raise awareness, but also understanding, and to improve ways we can help people that are living with dementia.
From visiting someone you know with dementia to being more patient in a shop queue, your actions matter!
