It’s the final day of National Apprenticeship Week!
To round off National Apprenticeship Week, our very own AAT apprentice, Sophie Ginger shares her career story on her studying progress and what she enjoys most about working as an apprentice at Osborne Morris & Morgan.
In October 2023, a new apprenticeship opportunity came up within our Accounts department and Sophie decided to go for it and got offered the job.
1. What advice would you give someone who is thinking about studying the AAT qualification?
For someone thinking about studying AAT, I would say research as much as you can! There are lots of helpful resources available online, including the AAT website.
You have to remember you will be working and studying at the same time which can be challenging. I would say be prepared and manage your expectations! Working, studying and having two health conditions at the same time can take its toll on you. The best way for me to manage this is being organised and having efficient time management skills.
As some of you may or may not know, I have two long-term health conditions; type 1 diabetes and epilepsy. Due to these conditions it is really important for me to consider and maintain my health and well-being at all times.
For those in doubt that are in a similar situation to me, it is possible to study, work and manage yourself. The main thing with all of these is to utilise the support system around you. I, myself, make sure I am open with my coach and team leader with all of these aspects whether these are positive or negative. Also, do not forget to check in and be kind to yourself. Rome was not built in a day and your course (depending on what you do) will at least be for a year.
We all have different ways we cope with stress, one of mine is to listen to some good old fashioned Motown music! My favourite to de-stress is September by Earth, Wind and Fire.
2. What is the culture like at OMM?
The culture at OMM is like having an extended family! It’s refreshing to be at a firm where everyone supports and looks after each other. I find that everyone is really friendly and approachable. Anytime I have a question, I don’t feel afraid to ask as I know my team will always be happy to answer.
3. What stood out to you about OMM when applying for opportunities?
To me, probably how supportive OMM are with you branching out and looking for new opportunities to progress within the firm and helping you go up the career ladder! I’m really excited to see where my career takes me within the accounts department!
