Debunking myths about Wills during “Update your Will” Week 2025

When it comes to making a Will, there are countless myths and misconceptions that prevent people from taking this crucial step in planning their future. Unfortunately, these myths can leave families vulnerable to unnecessary stress and legal complications. It’s time to set the record straight and make sure people understand the real importance of having a Will in place.

Update Your Will Week 2025

Here are some of the most common myths and misconceptions:

My spouse will inherit all my assets:

Even if you are married, it does not necessarily mean you husband or wife will automatically inherit all your assets after your death. When you die without a Will, the laws of intestacy apply. That means that your estate will be shared in a strict order dictated by the law.

Once I write a Will, it can’t be changed:

You can change your Will at any time as long as you have capacity. Personal circumstances change as time passes by and your personal wishes may change too. We recommend reviewing your Will every 5 years to make sure it reflects your circumstances at any point in time.

I’m too young to make a Will:

With a long to do list, making a Will always seems like something to do in the future. However, making a Will is something every adult should do as soon as possible.

Once you reach the age of 18, you are legally able to create a Will, and you should do straight away.

Your assets include things like clothes, car, pets, jewellery and other personal belongings. If you don’t have a Will in place, then you have no control over how these are distributed after you die.

I don’t have anything to leave behind:

One of the biggest myths surrounding Wills, is you only need one if you are wealthy. This couldn’t be further from the truth. A Will clarifies your wishes about:

  • Your funeral arrangements
  • Your house
  • Your possessions
  • Your donations to charity
  • Your wishes to appoint a guardian for children
  • Your pets

How we can help

The myths and misconceptions surrounding Wills often deter people from taking action, but knowledge is the key to breaking these barriers. A Will is not just a legal document – it’s a way to protect your loved ones, honour your wishes, and create a legacy that reflects your values.
