Celebrating Diwali at Osborne Morris & Morgan

On Monday 20th October, we came together to celebrate Diwali. The Festival of Lights.

The team enjoyed a selection of treats kindly brought in by Gurpreet, Krishna and Sheena. It was a wonderful opportunity to learn more about the cultural significance of Diwali, which symbolises the triumph of light over darkness and good over evil.

The celebration brought together colleagues in a joyful and inclusive atmosphere, reflecting the values of the firm. It was fantastic to see everyone embracing the spirit of Diwali.

Krishna Fatania, paralegal in our Court of Protection Department explains what Diwali means to her.

Diwali, the Festival of Lights, is celebrated widely around the world. Although its origins are rooted in Hinduism, Diwali is also celebrated in Sikhism, Jainism, and Buddhism – each faith marking the occasion in its own unique and meaningful way.

During Diwali, we’re reminded of its beautiful message: the victory of light over darkness, hope over despair, and good over evil. It’s a time to reflect, be grateful, and look ahead with positivity and purpose.

In Hinduism, the story of Diwali comes from the tale of Lord Rama, who returned home after 14 years in exile and a battle to rescue his wife, Sita, from the demon king Ravana. To welcome him back to Ayodhya, the people of his kingdom lit rows of candles (diyas) to light his way – symbolising the triumph of good, love, and truth.

Goddess Lakshmi

Diwali is also heavily associated with Goddess Lakshmi, who represents:

• Wealth and prosperity: not only in money, but in happiness, health, and harmony.

• Success: rewarding those who work hard, act with honesty, and show gratitude.

• Spiritual fulfilment: peace of mind, wisdom, and kindness that bring lasting joy.

• Purity: often depicted sitting on a lotus flower, symbolising beauty and rising above negativity.

In Sikhism, Diwali coincides with Bandi Chhor Divas, which marks the release of Guru Hargobind Ji, the sixth Sikh Guru, from imprisonment – a celebration of freedom, justice, and standing up for others.

Jains observe Diwali as the day Lord Mahavira, their most revered spiritual teacher, attained moksha (liberation).

Some Buddhists, particularly in Nepal, also celebrate Diwali, honouring Goddess Lakshmi and lighting lamps for peace and prosperity.

The Power of Light at OM&M

At Osborne Morris & Morgan, that spirit feels especially meaningful. Every day, we see the power of light in the care we show our clients, the teamwork that drives us forward, and the kindness that makes our workplace so special. Diwali reminds us that even the smallest light; a kind word, a moment of support, or a helping hand can brighten someone’s world.

Diwali is very significant to me and my family. The sharing of gifts, food, hugs, and happiness is truly heartwarming. It’s something that goes back many generations, and something that I’ll always remember celebrating with my family, colleagues, and friends.

Wishing everyone a joyful Diwali filled with peace, happiness, and new beginnings.
