Wife worth £20 million files for second divorce

Posted on 30 Mar 2016, in Family

The celebrity Cheryl Fernandez-Versini, formerly Cheryl Cole, has filed for divorce citing irreconcilable differences. Residents in Bedfordshire may recall that her first marriage with footballer Ashley Cole ended in a high profile divorce after several women revealed to the press that they had been having relationships with her husband. He reportedly admitted to unreasonable behaviour and the couple were granted what was announced as a quickie divorce.

Second marriages are shown to have a greater chance of failing due to stresses of the financial and family ties from the previous relationship. In this instance, the marriage lasted 18 months before she announced that it had broken down. One reason may be in view of the fact that the couple are said to have only dated for a short time before they were married. Cheryl Fernandez-Versini met her husband at the Cannes Film Festival and married him three months later.

Her financial situation regarding a divorce settlement is uncertain. Her net worth has been estimated to be £20 million and she has previously spoken of her distaste for prenuptial contracts. If her husband is unwilling to waive interest in a settlement, she may be obliged to part with a portion of her assets. Courts take into consideration the length of a marriage when they make a ruling regarding divorce settlements, and the length of the relationship before the wedding may also be deemed a factor.

Prenuptial agreements are not uncommon when significant assets could be considered part of marital property, and courts are increasingly taking into consideration the terms of these agreements in the event of a separation. A person may wish to seek legal advice from an experienced solicitor who is familiar with negotiating these types of agreements.
