A day in the life of a conveyancer

Conveyancing Solicitor
Jemma Wixted

Dealing with property and lease transactions, a conveyancing solicitor will usually describe their work as fast-paced, pressurised and full of variety.

The aim of every day is to complete as many transactions as possible and with every client’s journey being unique, life is certainly never boring.

Jemma Wixted shares with us her day in the life as a member of the conveyancing team at Osborne Morris & Morgan.

08:30 –I collect the post from reception and make a cup of coffee ready to start my day.

09:00 – After reviewing the post and incoming emails, I begin to prioritise matters for the day, including files that are due to complete.

12:00 – I attend to the non-urgent post and emails, dictating any necessary responses and communications required.

13:00 – Lunch time. It’s a chicken salad for me!

13:50 – A quick top up with coffee ready to deal with any returning calls from other conveyancers.

15:00 – General review of files to chase any necessary responses from other parties, such as solicitors, agents, clients, lenders.

16:00 – With all of the possible exchange of contracts for the day concluded and completion days set for our happy clients, the telephone calls begin to reduce, and work that requires more time to think about can be comfortably carried out.

16:15– I sign and review all post ready for collection by the administration team.

16:30 – There is a final review of priority matters to ensure they have been sufficiently dealt with.

17:30 – After sending numerous emails to clients with updates, it is time to depart for the evening.

As well as those daily activities, I will also be responding to any ‘pop-up’ work. This could be clients who visit the office with paperwork, emails that ‘pop-up’ in my inbox throughout the day, or external parties who ring for a quick update. All, of course, in a timely manner.

The variety of work in this fast-paced role is never-ending, but the journey is totally worth it. Being truly there for our clients, from the moment their offer is accepted to when they have keys handed over to them, gives me great joy.
